jazz & beatitude 2001

I operate a jazz performance space in downtown San Diego’s East Village called Dizzy’s. I’m treated to creative, inspiring music . . .night after night.
But my real passion is writing and recording my own music, based on themes, concepts, and phrases from the beat writers I so avidly read growing up.
“Beat.itude – the holy barbarians” is a folk-meets-jazz project that contains some amazing solos from the likes of altoist Charles McPherson and tenor mentor Daniel Jackson, among others.
The last song on the CD “It Ain’t Over Yet” is a tribute to “On The Road” and addresses the infamous Look magazine article that appeared soon after Kerouac’s death titled “So This Is How The Ride Ends.”

My newest CD project is called “Swallow Life” and it mines the rock and word territories and contains renderings of a Bob Kaufman poem, “All Hallows, Jack O Lantern Weather, North Of Time” and a Charles Bukowski prose piece, “Sometimes It’s Easier To Kill Somebody Else” woven in with my words and music.

Time may continue it’s relentless march, but the truth is still the truth . . .
