“We [the underground resistance in Paris] were never more free than during the German occupation”

(Jean-Paul Sartre)

The reason this quote comes to mind is that I’ve been walking around Manhattan for the past two weeks watching the reaction to the World Trade Center attack, and somehow it seems there is more feeling of warmth and unity between New Yorkers than ever before. One could say “we never felt more peaceful than after the Sept 11 attack”.

I’ve always wondered what J-P Sartre meant by that famous quote, but now I think I fully understand it.
