I saw that no one had thrown attention to your post , i wasn’t sure what to say but i wanted to see about writing something since no one else had. I’m unsure how hard Bukowski worked , i could guess he wasn’t so attention to detail that he would spend hours revising but i can see him spending hours writing. In a poem he wrote as i remember something he wrote , maybe it was a short story not sure. But i remember Bukowski talking about his landlady yelling at him from the above floor because of the clapping of the typewriter arm. He would type very late at night.
I can imagine that although he may have had trouble from his environment it almost was significant to creating his writing , his characters , emotions , thinking all was drawn toward his living. The skid rows , pissholes, shit shacks, bars , factories all created the poetic noise for him. He has written so much poetry that im not sure how hard he was working but how often he wanted to write. In his book ” The Captain is out to Lunch and the Sailors have taken over the Ship,” similar to a short memoir. In some entries he wrote that he didn’t write for some time and has to get back to doing it. Id suggest reading that if haven’t already done so. I would say that Buk lived more than he wrote and when he wrote he wrote hard about the hard grit between his fingernails.. About Ginsberg i dunno , i only read Howl , i never could get into Ginsberg so much ,i read Kerouac more than other of the beats , Kerouac was indifferent to the rest of beats he was a forefather but they only knew him as that which he was more of a writer than that, i dunno maybe im wrong someone tell me different. So people ive talked to dont think to highly of Ginsberg’s work , maybe because they thought it was so easy to write in the same similar fashion. But im not such an authority on ginsberg , havent read him enough ,i only know Buk and i know that Buk didn’t especially like Ginsberg or his work. Theres a book called Bukowski and the Beats which is a good book about it all. In it is a chapter about his relationship with the beats. In the chapter it explains about at a party where Buk and Ginsberg both were there and Buk was drunk of course and being charmingly arrogant. But i guess Ginsberg was said some things moking Buk. Talks about how Ginsberg couldn’t hold his drink and got sick from Whiskey , its interesting. I wrote alot huh ? , i hope you read this since i was the only one to answer,i hope my thoughts helped .
