I have to say that I definately think that the men writers of today are better than the women writers, as a group. While it is getting to be a little closer in quality and quantity, there is still an alarming gulf. Of course, in the past the gulf has been even wider.

I don’t know why this is. Elsewhere in society the gaps have been closing much more rapidly, often with men being overtaken. But the supremely good novelists, continue to be men. They are more deft with language and at understanding people, imho. And they bring more excitement and verve to what they write.

I confess that it has gotten to the point that I discriminate by gender somewhat it what I pick to read. I read an Ann Tyler novel about six months ago and knew that Tyler doesn’t have a clue about the brains of men. But you can read John Irving and know that he fully understands men, women, children and cows in all their variety. And while Tyler’s writing is uninspired; Irving sparks and whirrs and bedazzles.
