i think holden is a sympathetic character. i dont need to like the main characters in all the books i read. a similar character can be found in “the stranger,” by camus, in which the main character goes thru life morose and disinterested and then kills someone for the hell of it. but he’s still a sympathetic character, in part because he doesnt recognize his flaws.

i think you’re being fairly condescending by suggesting that people who enjoy this book do so because they complain and bitch and whine all day, full of angst in their bad childhoods. thats really not accurate whatsoever. anyone who’s interested in the human condition can find meaning in this book.

of course not everyone needs to like the book. no one is suggesting that. but your suggestion that those who do are lesser men than yourselves is naive and unjustified.
