I first read Call of the Wild in fourth grade, and after finishing it I scoured the library until I’d devoured everything he’d every written. The books had everything: adventure, passion, appreciation of nature, survival of the fittest. There was life there, with no sugar coating. And for the kind of kid who’d rather watch lions pull down a zebra on the Discovery Channel than Wiley E. Coyote Acme the Road Runner, they were perfect.
