I also became interested in the beats in high school, although my teachers were not cool eneough to present them to me in class, which is really unfortunate. Your teacher is probably a good resource as to what books to read, because he/she is obviously interersed. Still, here are some of my recommendations:

1. Finish Howl. It will blow your mind
2. Read On the Road, by Jack Kerouac
3. Read The Dharma Bums, by Jack Kerouac
4. Read Go, by John Clellon Holmes
5. Pick up a copy of The Portable Beat Reader, and read as much as you can
6. Read Dharma Lion, the best bio on Allen Ginsberg, or Memory Babe, the best on Kerouac. These books will not only give you a lot of info on the individual writer, but a whole chronology of the movement.
