Eventually the Beat found me, once I picked up a copy of “On the Road” while traveling. It’s led me through many beat writers and poets and has now led me on to Zen buddhism and Eastern Philosophy.

I think that many others have given some great titles to read – but I also believe that a solid grasp of Eastern philosophy and practice will help in your understanding and appreciation of the “beats”. It has for me – and it’s been fascinating. Read: D.T. Suzuki, Alan Watts, Masao Abe, works on Taoism like Chuangzu and the Tao te Ching, the Diamond Sutra and The Bhagavad Gita. I also liked “Zen Flesh, Zen Bones” – interesting read.
