The Sorrows of Young Werther
This is probably a pretty strange choice, but I saw Goethe's "The Sorrows of Young Werther" in a bookstore and thought it looked interesting. Apparently this was was Goethe's first book, and was a HUGE pop-culture phenomenon back in the 1770's. So I wanted to see what it was all about.
The book is short and easy-to-read (two of my favorite qualities in a book), and it basically amounts to an intellectual, somewhat pretentious and dramatic young man's notes on everyday life, visiting small towns, falling madly in love and being rejected, etc. I believe it will come to a tragic end but I haven't reached that part yet.
