I think they reveal so much about a writer. Reading these letters is fucking hilarious. They are really wacky some of them. Like blagues almost. He berates editors, cigarette makers, dry cleaners. I don't remember exactly who he wrote to. I think to Johnson once in search of a government position. Anyway, you all know this I just always found it damn funny. Bukowski's letters do the same for me. I didn't fully get into Buk until after reading the letters. Differently, the both are exactly in stride with their published "writing." Sounds corny but there is a raw integrity, unity, honesty if you will when you witness the relationship. I'm a bit cooked so this is somewhat blasé perhaps and disjointed. Just wanted to share my enthusiasm for letters!
