I'm glad you told me that, I had no idea the book was widely read anywhere.
Here in America the critical word on "Young Werther" is that it is not one of the major Goethe books. Very popular first novels by serious novelists often get derided -- another example is Dostoevsky's "Poor Folks" which was a major hit in 19th Century St. Petersburg but is now barely considered worth reading. I read it and thought it was great. You can learn a lot about a writer by reading the writer's first novel.
That 1972 book sounds really odd. I wonder if it was translated into English?
