DOSTOYEVSY-WHICH TRANSLATIONS ARE MORE RELIABLE??

Posted to WritersAndGenres

I FINISHED CRIME AND PUNISHMENT AND THE KARAMAZOV BROTHERS, WHICH WAS EXTREMLY LENGHTY AND OF DENSE AT TIMES.
RECENTLY I PICKED UP THE IDIOT, WHICH IS`NT TRANSLATED BY CONSTANCE GARNETT, BUT BY EVA M. MARTIN.
I`VE GROWN TO TRUST GARNETT, AS HIS TRANSLATION OF ALL DOSTOYEVSKY`S WORK IS RESPECTED AND PRAISED BUT THIS VERSION OF THE IDIOT HAS THROWN ME OFF.
SHOULD I GO AHEAD AND TRY IT OUT?ITS A LONG BLOODY BOOK AND MAYBE I`D BE BETTER STICKING WITH THE GARNETT VERSION?
I DON`T WANT TO READ A WORK THAT IS A POOR TRANSLATION OF THE ORIGINAL, OR AM I JUST NIT PICKING??!!
