Hunter hardly thought "Big Sur sucked". He lived there himself for several years (unfortunately after Henry Miller left) and loved every minute. He didn't leave until he had no choice (was basically kicked out... typical HST ;]).
HST also thought the world of Jack and has recorded several poems on/about/by Jack and himself. Many haven't seen daylight yet. There's one specific popular (short) reading called 'Ode to Jack' which jokes about Jack's ability to kill dogs.
Many of the beats had a love-hate-love relationship with hunter.. the most visible being with Burroughs (imagine that).
