Sarah Hughes and Daniel Pearl
Today I experienced vicariously the depths of despair and the heights of giddiness as I learned of Daniel Pearl's senseless and gruesome murder and Sarah Hughes's improbable gold medal victory. I near teared up as I saw images of Pearl with his wife, and then tied with a gun to his head, and read of his horrible murder. I felt pain as I learned of his wife Mariane's desparate pleas for his release and of the fact that she was more than six months pregnant with their first child. Later I near teared up as I viewed Sarah's near flawless free skate, and her joyful reaction as she learned she had accomplished her life's goal. I felt joy as she stood upon the podium and saw her smile. Such is the human experience.
