That may have been Fitzgerald's point, but as a Queens native I really disagree!
I lived in Manhattan for a couple of years, but Queens is more home-y and I like it here.
It is correct, though, that the valley of ashes is closer to the city than East Egg/West Egg/Great Neck/Little Neck. They turned it into a park for the '39 Worlds Fair, and the '64 World's Fair was here too. Shea Stadium and the US Open tennis stadium are also in the park. Not bad for a valley of ashes.
