the billowing signs at City Lights

fluttering from the upper story
straight up Columbus, off Broadway
white banners
a series of faces
with american flags glued to mouthplaces
above them
in black 48 bf times roman
waving in the wind you couldn't help
but read the letters:
TO
DISSENT
IS
NOT
UN
AMERICAN

i went inside vesuvio's and had a drink
the bartender talked about the oakland fire in 91
an opiuum addict came in and drank a half a cherry coke
oh, he comes in here all the time, every day for four cherry cokes
it's his ritual, you know
i looked down at the two quarter tip
next to the half-drank glass of cherry cola
a lone stemmed cherry crushed beneath the ice
the glass sweating on the bar
i had a shot and i had a beer
i left a beer for jack and drove home across the bay
in the sunshine
