There but for the grace of God go I

Posted to Poetry

As I introduce my face
To the cold wet stone
That marks this place
I ponder on the time
Gone by and why I
Never bothered die

If I stay here on the ground
don't move a muscle or
make a sound, perhaps the chaps
that wander by, can ponder
on who here lies

Few take interest in my plight
Others glance and pass in fright
In the land of Saints and Scholars
All around are ties and collars

No Saintly words or wise suggestions
No helping hand to ease the pain
They see no human being here
Just a shell of a man crying with fear

With all my strength and pain endured
I twist my head and catch the sky
With dying breath a few words uttered

"There but for the grace of God go I".
