The greatest difference

between these two works I always thought was in the choice of narrative voice. Kerouac placed his fictional (?) persona at the centre of the activities and everything was remarked upon through his own singular consciousness whereas Burroughs' chose to remove himself as far as possible for an author to do so and still maintain any form of selectivity over the work. The point of view in NL continually shifts while OTR is seen entirely through the eyes of Sal (Jack). These positions were maintained by both authors through most of their mature works.
