Other than Rexroth
there were few others who knew as much about Eastern lit. Much of their knowledge came from Pound (etc.), but if one does not understand imagism and Eastern "metaphor" it would be easy to miss this as well.
Besides much of Rexroth and Snyder knowledge found its way (either directly or indirectly) to the Beats. On top of that both Ginsberg and Kerouac did fairly extensive research on this topic.
It is funny how the Beat writers are never given credit for their knowledge on literary topics. Either scholars want to put them down as babbling morons or (many) writers want to use them as an excuse for not reading literature or doing any kind of study.
This is a favorite topic of mine and I am glad to see that we are having an actual conversation this time.
