Glad we agree about so much. However,
I think you are mistaken in your easy
characterization of Chambers' work.

As for Kerouac's "struggle": if he wanted to
learn about the far east (the presumed first
step), he would have done better to have taken
a few years to learn a language like classical
Chinese--which is precisely how Rexroth
approached the same issue. As it was,
Kerouac wasn't interested in really learning,
but only in taking: a kind of selective
eclecticism that reflects his orientalism and
problematic relationship with non-white
people.
