this, an america

Posted to Action Poetry

what is this america i see flying past my window now that i'm awake, this, an america of convenience stores & fast food restaurants, gazebos in white on pure town squares, fishing boats in harbor with wooden masts, crusted statues of civil war heroes, broken greenhouses & abandoned brick buildings & stone benches by waterway pools

go!

this an america of construction sites & gift shops & sea food markets, of red white & blue banners on hopeless buildings, of crosses on walls & lighthouses & gas pumps & one-way streets, stop signs & clapbopard houses & white picket fences, a rusted vw beetle & grease-covered men in a car

go!

of bike riders, cycles, jack's home auto care, arnold peck realty, pepper farm drive & clark hill road, of the berea assembly of god & the christ congregational church, of flags on the side of the house & rocking chairs on the front porch & beat wooden trailers & hand-made walls

go!

this an america of plowed fields & 18-wheel trucks, of towns like milford & woodmont, home to skateboard boys & pepsi on ice, wetland marshes & harry's bar & grille

go!

where they cut lawns & stalk sidewalks, stop at bill's corner beverage for a suitcase of beer & go broke & put cars up for sale & lose jobs & sell houses & take out the trash & go fishing for dinner, watch birds as they land on the hedge, where they go to the beach & bitch on the phone & run red lights & hang plants & put up lawn ornaments; where they buy children toys & make life hard & play catch

go!

some wait for dates & try to forget, lift weights & make love on the couch, watch the horizon for those who don't come, clean condos with lions out front, drink beer & eat frozen yogurt in sidewalk cafes

go!

and this an america with names on brick walls & hearts carved in trees & oh the red tinsel of a used car lot & the perfect deal at the five & dime, wait for the bus, mail letters & cook out, hold onto library books past due, pose for the camera & leave for the weekend & read the paper & watch roses grow, stay in school, watch tv as if it will never leave

go!

and this, an america, here, i imagine is true
