A suicide bomber blew himself up Wednesday at a crowded bus stop here, killing seven people, including a two-year-old child, and wounding 37 in Jerusalem's second deadly attack in two days.
Police said the bomber was dropped off by a speeding car and sprinted towards the bus stop in French Hill, a Jewish community in Arab east Jerusalem close to the line with the disputed city's western sector.
Seven people were killed in the early evening blast, police said, with Jerusalem Mayor Ehud Olmert identifying one of the dead as the toddler.
Some of the 37 wounded were reported in serious condition, including a border policeman who tried in vain to chase down the suicide bomber before he could set off his explosive charge. The Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, an armed group linked to Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's Fatah movement, claimed responsibility for the bombing in Jerusalem, in a statement received by AFP in Beirut.
The attack was "carried out by the Raed Karmi martyr group to avenge the death of Walid Sbeih," Al-Aqsa said, referring to two of the group's militants killed by the Israeli army in the West Bank.
