when you’re sleeping

what do you dream when you’re sleeping
& you don’t remember the dream
knocks on metal doors
pale riderless horses
in calypso rhythm conga drums
antique metaphors, nuances
on the bottom of a stream
a smooth stone, 10,000 years
past glacial deposition
inside that stone a chip
from the tooth of a smiling reptile
no one dreams these dreams
only you
& all you take with you
& i’m the one in the fog pointing the heroic way home
