Just like every other youth movement, the beats were seen by the adult media as a horde of irresponsible, immoral delinquents. It's incredible how every generation portrays the generation coming after them as completely lacking in moral seriousness. The irony is that the height of the Beat "scare" came after Kerouac published "On The Road" and he was, what, 35 at the time?
