I dont think i know of any good writers who are not "writing to try figure and figure out [their] own life" and love , religion and happiness are usually a big part of that. As for the neat package; i suppose thats idealism and at the very least it was an idealist vision unique to him. His own shambolic last decade derailed his plans for the "legend" but his legacy is far more interesting than the "Duluoz Legend", as conceived, ever could be.
