Like wow, man

Is this the new Beat language forum? If so, I wonder about the origin of the now popular term "like." I recently saw an old Lenny Bruce TV show and noticed him saying "like" as often as young people today. I vaguely recall "hipsters" or Beats in the 50s using this expression, as in thr title of this message. It certainly changes rhe beat of a sentence.
