I have always dug Chuck Berry too. I saw him perform once. I'm sure you know the legend (which is completely true) of how he arranges his live performances. He asks the concert promoter to find him a band. He doesn't meet them or talk to them or tell them what he's going to play. He doesn't seem to know himself what he's going to play until he starts. They do their best to keep up, and somehow it ends up working out.

I don't think Chuck really gets enough credit as a true adherent to the spontaneous style of creativity.

My favorite live Chuck CD: Fillmore East, I think it's 68, with Steve Miller's band playing backup.
