. . . writing on paper, using the top of the refrigerator for a desk top (in those days refrigerators were not as tall as they are now), and would toss each page into a box and then finally send the box-full of paper to editor Max Perkins, who would edit it down to the masterpieces which were published. Also, one time Wolfe came home after drinking and went into the wrong apartment. The man who lived in the apartment confronted him but Wolfe was so cool and easy-going that soon the guy was having drinks with Wolfe and they were getting along like good buddies.
