During his lifetime, Stéphane had a reputation in the popular press of being obscure in his poetry and prose. I'm just starting to delve into his œvres and so far find him delightfully clear and "modern". A good place to start with SM might be his prose poems (tonight I read one of these, "Plainte D'Automne" ("Autumn Lament") with Henry Weinfield's English translation en face).
