Who picks the heros?

Posted to Poetry and Politics

I went to war as a boy
trapped in a mans' phillisophy
I was told if I died in action
then I would come home in a bag
applauded by the Army as a hero
these men with ribbons doing
the hero choosing is sick
my mother wanted me home
her boy, not a hero
just the milk & cookies
of his recent youth
I came home dammaged & scared
so this is being a MAN?
I think not, as I slurp
milk and chew on cookies
to daytime TV
