i rub ash
into the faded black jeans
i've been wearing for a week now.

carve swirls
with the tip
of a jagged fingernail
hung on my cotton shirt
stiff from sleep sweat

i pummel
my rounded knees
with sharp elbows--
trace ribbones
with hungry hands.

rub a coated tounge
over hard teeth

suck air in
and fill a grumbling belly.
