a somber sky hangs heavily over this sedate fall
gray earth tones tinge the leaves
turning them into russets, sages, and not quite yellows
nation’s fashion police have declared solemnity
to be the dress mode this year
but once in a while, a rebel by the roadway
stands radiant in yellow, orange or scarlet
flamboyant in contrast
to the moody woods standing enviously nearby
as usual, it is the nonconformist who catches the eye
