august moon lights my face

Posted to Action Poetry

this blustery october dusk
sends a chill down my spine
as i retrieve the morning paper,
wet and mangled
from a day spent in the rain.
i pause at the foot
of the driveway, suddenly
overcome by the laughter
of a five year old girl
riding her new bike,
training wheels still on,
bell ringing, face full
of innocent wonder
at the simple joys of life.
a moan escapes my lips
at the memory-
the memories-
that haunt my mind 24/7.
i know one day they'll
bring joy.
but right now,
i gaze up at the crisp
early night, and
the august moon
lights my face.
