You know, it might have been a quote of this guy McKenna on a website somewhere that gave me the idea of space-borne spores in the first place …

But I never stopped to think of what happened BEFORE the spores arrived on Earth … or the why’s or wherefore’s. I was solely interested in finding a semi-plausible mechanism to explain the transfer of Jack’s memories and personality traits to his son, Richard.

For me, they were just THERE, in the ether. But the notion that they were there WITH INTENT … well, that’s a juicy concept, and one I wish I’d had in mind at the time of writing.

Richard (Kerouac’s fictional son) is, in a positive sense, a mutant. Perhaps, given what you say, an alien/human hybrid? That could have led to some highly interesting situations further down the timeline …
