Why do we read?
When I was locked up I was deprived of many of the little joys of life. My freedom of movement was restricted. I missed the companionship and the counsel of women. My friends and associates were unavailable to me. Little children are a wonder and a delight and I missed them. I couldn’t enjoy a drink or a smoke. But I had books. They were my friends and my salvation. I read with a zeal I had never known before, though I had always been an avid reader. During the time of my vacation with the Governor I read 1400 volumes. I took adventures with historians and explorers. I lived the lives of great men. I was a spy and a cowboy and an alien. I explored philosophies and prejudices and points of view. I bathed in the insights into the heart of mankind that only literature can provide.
