i'm not so sure that it has all that much to do with the art itself. that is to say, i think that for anyone's art to be commercially viable, the artist has to both understand and be willing to play the game. i think commercial success comes from the consumers knowing who the artist is, and being willing to shell out their cash for whatever it is that the artist creates. and i guess for that to be possible, the artist has to be willing to work through the commercial media channels.

does that count as selling out?
