The Beats introduced me...

Posted to Utterances

...to a way of life I had not been familiar with till i read them...

...bring from a conservative, military family, the values the Beats expressed were quite different from what i had been raised with...

...because of the Beats i sought out things that I might not have looked for otherwise...not everything they introduced me to was good, by the way, but everything was an experience that helped me develop into who i am now...

...i took drugs because of the Beats...I hitchhiked all over the place because of the Beats...i jumped train cars because of the Beats (although i owe that one to many influences)...I experimented with the criminal lifestyle (drug dealing, B&E, grift), not because I was drawn to criminallity but becasue I was trying to push the bounds as much as possible and that is what the Beats taught me - expand outside your life, embrace the differences...

...the Beats are a major reason why I came west, why I live where I live now (the Bay area) and even why i am with the woman i with now...also, when I first came west, going to CityLights was like a religious pilgramage for me...

...I started reading the Beats when I was 14 or 15 and it lead to whole new way of looking at life...it lead me Philosophy and investigations into existentialism...it introduced me to poetry that schools never told me about...it lead me to the art world and beyond...

...now that im am older i can look back at the Beats and be more objective in my evaluation of them and their literary merit and I can recognize their fallacies but when i first got involved in reading them I became obessed and thats good because it showed me ways to things I never knew how to reach...
