The 1951 definition you offered is excellent. My own dictionary, the New Penguin, adds that a literary vignette is, "a short descriptive literary sketch, esp. a charming one." The vignette, therefore, should be compact, subtle, delicate, and charming; a daunting task for any writer, I suspect.
