Time to read your history books. Gorbachev was certainly in power at the time. But he was no altruistic saint, protector of freedom...he was merely in the seat when they had no other choice. USSR collapsed under the weight of a non-sustainable doctrine of Stalinist Communism, a closed economy that bred generations of people without initiative. I've been there and seen it. Gorby just reacted to the inevitable. When it became obvious he wasn't willing to go it all the way, he was forced out. He was a spectator drawn into making some decisions out of necessity.
