Serve Your Country

I
Serve your country, good or bad—
Don’t betray it—it’s no fad,
What is meant by it to serve?
To don camouflage and fight,
Or to dissent and soon write?
Some would quick say you have nerve,
To protest your country’s war.
Dissent: democracy’s core. . .
And war is not its glory.

II
Soldier, I wish I knew your plight;
You toil in and out of sight,
You rightly serve your great country—
Even in its wrong—That is right.
You serve the nation day and night,
That noble action is right, right?
Soldier, I wish I knew your plight.
