In the face of increasingly vehement anti-American protests in Iraq by Iraqis, Jay Garner, when asked about them, answered (and I paraphrase because I heard this on the radio) "Well, that's the first sign of liberation, the ability, the freedom, to protest".
And yet, in the United States, throughout the war, anti-war protesters were repeatedly criticized, castigated, called "un-American" and otherwise put down for voicing their opinions.
