The Sheltering Sky

I've been meaning to read this novel since I finished the Spider's House years ago. Paul Bowles has such a naturally brilliant style, he's a magnificent story teller. His principal characters are wholly human and much of the character interplay and drama is in nouance and gesture - so subtle, so beautiful, so clever. And the cross-cultural clash of Europeans, Americans and Moroccans isn't portrayed better by anyone, he's (un)kindly laughing at us all. At this stage, I'd say The Spider's House is the better book, it's less cliched and has a stronger political dimension, but I've not reached the end yet...
