I read those two...

books practically one after the other a few years ago. I had the same thoughts. One thing came across clear...these two seemed ALWAYS ON. They were energetic in their lives, their original published works, and definitely in their letters. I am still astounded as to when they had the time to keep up such an extraordinary amount of correspondence to every one they knew (and didn't know). Amazing. I loved both Kerouac's and Thompson's volumes...I was absorbed by these two voices working their magic wordplay outside their roles as novelist and journalist. The letters show in such an honest way their love of writing. The Chicago Tribune called the Kerouac letters "The most exhilirating book of the year." And it was...Both were Energizing. The immediate effect of those two books on me---an uncontrollable urge to write and send LETTERS to everyone I knew (and didn't know)! Letter writing, it has been said, is an art (many lament a fading art)...and Kerouac and Thompson are word artists (in my opinion) despite the format..."Caffeinated performance!" as my dad would say to energetic achievements...
