read any of Newman’s language books, but I’d say that he and Safire are in the same ballpark. Probably one big difference is that Safire is much more “politics”-oriented than Newman (one of Safire’s claims to fame is that he was once a speechwriter for Nixon and Agnew and the likes of them in Washington). You can still see Safire as a “talking head” on the Sunday-morning TV political discussion shows.
