followed by later clarity of his statement is what I got from "Leaving Cheyenne". His plotting is apparently haphazard and lifelike, but the characters' reactions to an occurance finally reveal what's being said about life by McMurtry. Like walking through a valley, heading up the opposite ridge, then turning around to see where you've been - McMurtry's intent is obvious only in recollection of what he's had the characters do.
