In fact, John Q. Adams beat Andrew Jackson in the same fashion.
I think the Electoral College is a relatively good thing. Makes sure there's not Too Much power in the hands of the people. 'Cause when the people get too much power, they kill Socrates and elect Alexander the Great supreme ruler.
Which isn't to say that the government should have all the power, because it shouldn't. There's supposed to be balances, but they're out of whack recently, in this age where the President of the U.S. gets to be the ultimate warlord of the world
