dont get me wrong i love on the road, i truely do..BUT..i believe it gets way more credit than it deserves. Kerouac's fame should not be attributed towards one of his lesser accomplishments ( ON THE ROAD) but to his other brilliant spontaneous prose like subterraneans, triss tesa, big sur, dharma bums, visions of cody....

i believe on the road works great as an impetus towards further enduring nights spent delving into the beat generation!!!
in high school i took a class on counter culture and we read on the road. after this i thought with reading this i had traversed and conquered kerouac at his zenith, boy was i wrong. dont read on the road again right now, read it again...after you have read his other works, doing this may just leave you scratchin' ur head and wonderin what all the hype was about...again, great book...a culture bearing book...this is why it was great, it was written at a time when people needed a kick in the ass. just like Uncle Tom's Cabin, not a great literary masterpiece, but with what force it came upon us.....................
