...the biographies he did of people...the one's in Baudelaire and Mallarme are incredible. In one of the volumes in Situations he does a retrospecitve on Maurice Merleau-Ponty...his supreme acheivement however is definitely The Family Idiot his 5 vol. and incomplete study of Flaubert and and the literary bourgeoisie of post-Napoleonic France
