I like old children's books, like Alice in wonderland, Winnie the pooh, The Hobbit, The Narnia chronicles etc, but the Harry Potter are the only modern children's book that even come slightly to the level of theese classics. The thing that I find interesting is how the story gets better and the world more complex with each book. The first two Potter books are still pretty "normal" children's fantasy, but the later..... Rowling also uses humour in an interesting way (love the description of Harry's relatives at the beginning of book one).
