very dense and heavy-going - completely unlike cancer ward or one day in the life of... in that respect. the first few days of ww1 from a russian perspective, and then the build-up over 20 years.

good range of 'voices' in it - from low-ranking ncos to the tsar himself.

still waiting for it to feel worthwhile though.
